Hi I'm new here, and I was wondering seeing that the last post by the band was in 2011 if the protomen still peruse the forums? Are they still active on the site?

It is rare. They will step in if they need to, but this place hasn't been the main hub of Protomen activity in a long time. If you need to talk to a band member, many of them have "in-character" Facebooks and Murphy & Commander run the Facebook page.

Ok cool, I'll keep it in mind. I'm a big fan of course and I'm an aspiring film student. I wanted to get acquainted with the community and see what ideas I could glean for a possible protomen rock opera. or see if anything remotely like that has been done before, and then of course see if could talk to any representative or member and see what they thought of the idea. I wasn't sure how close they are with their community so I wanted to check.

TL:DR I want to make a protomen movie and I'm immersing myself in the ecosystem.

Aah. this forum's kinda slow too, but usually posts are pretty details. The Storyboard thread might give you some ideas.

Well if you've been keeping up with the latest gossip, that idea is a no go. Sad to say but you're not the first person to come in here with a good idea to make a film. The community is torn on the subject matter. On one hand, we would love to see it done. On the other, you, or any other film maker, could never possibly incorporate the visuals of the story that we all have in our head from the music. Believe me, I think I speak for everyone here that it would be an awesome idea if it could ever be done, it's just a very touchy subject.

In the past we've had several fan projects come to the boards, each promising to be the greatest thing ever. While they may have had good intentions, they never followed through with them nor have we heard from them again. You literally have joined where within the past week, a new filming project has been embarked and has caused some very bad blood. I won't get into all of the details of the shitstorm of what's going on but the wording and practices of the most recent endevour has several of the fans either, worried, skeptical, or out right opposed and pissed off.

If I could recommend one thing for you it would be to not give up on your dream or goal, whatever you may call it. But what I would suggest is that you just create your film/rock opera, and do not ask us for help/funds/suggestions. I would recommend that the first thing that you do is getting in touch with the band themselves, something with is nearly impossible. Ask for permission rather than forgiveness. If you're given the go ahead and can work out the details, then create away.

tl;dr
Touchy subject. The less we know the better. Either way, welcome to the boards.

Actually I really don't want it at all - unless it's the actual band producing it. Everybody has the right to their own vision of what the story is, of course. But only the band have the right to ask us (the fandom) for money for it. And only they really know how the story's supposed to be told, because it's their story.

Basically though, Jay's post is full of truth otherwise.

I will gladly give my input on what I would like to see in a fanfilm. However, unless I see some really good proof-of-concept or something, I am putting literally no money in.

So, short list of suggestions:
-Only use the music from the albums. If you are making a full-length film you MIGHT be able to include a narrator who narrates some of the parts in the instrumental songs. But even that's debatable. (No narrator can do justice to How The World Fell Under Darkness or Funeral For A Son. Intermission...could do with a dude narrating Tom's letter. Perhaps before it ever plays.)
-If you're doing Act I: Use actors for the Robot Masters, in costume. A decent-to-great costume can be made for under $100 if you're doing it right. "But O6, how do I Gutsman?" Easy: 6'4" fat dude, motorbike helmet, crossing guard vest. He's only in a couple scenes, shouldn't be that hard.
-Base the costumes on the stage show. That's the versions of Mega Man and Protoman everyone knows, and that's the version everyone is expecting. (Every time I see Protomen-style art where Protoman has an open face, my blood boils.)
-This is just something I would personally do but some of us have long held the belief that Act I in its entirety is a performance by a single man--all of the music is an imaginary journey, it's really just a man and his guitar. And that man is Doug Fetterman, long-since-killed in action original Protomen member. But that's me.

I wasn't suggesting that we want a fan film to be the film itself. If THE film were to be made, I would want The Protos to be involved to but from what I read in the initial post, I assume that this guy or gal would like to just do something.

What my post was meant to say:
-Everyone has their own interpretation.
-No one can stop you from being creative
-We would gladly watch whatever you create AFTER it's completed.

What we (probably) will not do:
-Hold your hand and help you make any creative decisions. The story is too open with only one video with their approved artistic visual
-Fund anything. Some may differ on this one. You've approached this board, as I've said before, at an awkward time. You appear to be humble and possibly with good intention but to be honest, I don't know why anyone would donate money to a cause that wasn't officially in communication or direction of the band itself. Now I'm not saying that you cannot/will not do a great job if you would ever choose to pursue the idea. But my point is, and may be for a lot, why would I give my money to you for a fan made Protomen film/performance? Why couldn't I give my money directly to The Protomen in hopes that they would actually do such a thing. I may not know as much as the older and more devout BROtos here but if I recall correctly, most, if not ALL of them, are involved with theatre. It would make sense that the could possibly do this themselves one day.

What I DON'T want you to take away from any of this:
Please don't be discouraged by any of what is said. If you feel the fire in your heart to do this, then just get out there and do it! Show us that there can be some more amazing fan creativity! But remember that your vision is just that: your vision.

Base costumes on the art of Act 1 CD, plz. I want my pseudo-Mexican wrestlers with chaps and battered old coats and luchadore masks under the helmets and shit. Helmet designs can mirror the stage set, tho.

/still wouldn't pay for it unless it were the band doing it.

I'm an animator, I have an 3d modeller for a fiance, and I'm best friends with a recently-graduated film student. My brother is a musician who can help pad out the bg music when the actual music isn't playing (you know, during dialogue, ect.)

I'm willing to help out in any way I possibly can.

Also, my roomate is a seq. arts major. He'd be a huge help storyboarding if I can get him off his ass.
